Strong Signs A Business Team Will Function Well When The Leader’s Away
The clearest test of team autonomy is not what happens while the leader is present. It is whether judgment, momentum and responsibility continue when the leader steps away.
Mohamed Al Hashemi’s Forbes Contribution
I know a team is truly working when I come back from a few days away and don’t find a pile of decisions waiting for me. That doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from giving people context instead of instructions, trusting them to make decisions and accepting that they won’t do everything exactly the way you would.

Three Conditions Behind Team Autonomy
Context instead of instructions
Instructions solve the situation a leader anticipated. Context gives people enough understanding to decide when circumstances change.
Trust before absence
A team cannot suddenly become autonomous when the leader leaves. Decision authority has to be practiced and trusted while the leader is present.
Independence without imitation
The standard is sound judgment, not perfect replication. Leaders have to accept that capable people will not make every decision exactly as they would.
